Start-up and shutdown, done right
Spring start-up
Reconnect the water supply, install new pads, check the pump, float valve, belt and motor, clean the pan and test the cooler.
Fall shutdown
Shut off and drain the water line, drain and clean the pan, disconnect the pump and close the cooler so it is ready for winter.
Pad replacement
Fresh pads cool better, reduce odors and keep minerals off the rest of the cooler.
Swamp cooler not cooling?
Most cooler problems come down to water, airflow or the motor. We find the cause and fix it.
- Pump not wetting the pads
- Float valve stuck or leaking
- Worn or broken belt
- Motor not running or overheating
- Musty smells or mineral buildup
- Water leaking from the cooler or duct
New evaporative coolers, or a switch to AC
We replace worn-out rooftop and side-draft coolers and can update the water line, ducting and controls.
Thinking about central air or a heat pump instead? We will compare the options with you, including rebates.
- Rooftop and side-draft coolers
- Water line and drain updates
- Two-speed motors and controls
- Central AC or heat pump comparison
Swamp cooler to central AC or heat pump conversion
If your swamp cooler can't keep up on humid monsoon days, or you're tired of spring start-ups and fall shutdowns, we can replace it with central air or a heat pump. We check whether your ductwork can carry cooled air, close up the roof or window opening, and size the new system with a Manual J. See AC installation or heat pumps for what's involved.
- Roof or window opening sealed and insulated
- Ductwork checked and modified for cooling
- Central AC or a heat pump that also heats
- Ductless mini-splits for homes without ducts

Evaporative cooler questions
When should my swamp cooler be started up and shut down?
Start-up is usually in late spring once the risk of a hard freeze has passed, and shutdown in early fall before the first freeze. We can schedule both.
How often should cooler pads be replaced?
Most aspen pads should be replaced every season. Rigid media pads last longer but still need cleaning and inspection.
Evaporative cooler or air conditioning?
Evaporative coolers work well in Colorado's dry climate and cost less to run, but they add humidity and don't cool as well on humid days. Central AC or a heat pump cools more evenly. We can help you compare.
Do you replace evaporative coolers?
Yes. We replace rooftop and side-draft coolers and can also help you switch to central AC or a heat pump.
