Manual J Load Calculations in Broomfield, CO
Before we install a furnace, AC or heat pump, we calculate how much heating and cooling your home actually needs, room by room. It's how we make sure the system fits your house, not a square-foot rule of thumb.
- Walls, ceilings and insulation levels
- Window size, type and direction
- Air leakage and ventilation
- Duct location and losses
- Local design temperatures at altitude
The industry standard for sizing heating and cooling
Manual J is the ACCA (Air Conditioning Contractors of America) method for calculating heating and cooling loads. It looks at how much heat each room loses on a cold winter night and gains on a hot summer afternoon, based on how your home is actually built.
The result is a heating and cooling load for the whole house and for every room. The whole-house number guides the equipment choice (Manual S). The room-by-room numbers tell us how much air each room needs, which drives the duct design (Manual D).
Why rules of thumb get it wrong
Sizing by square footage or matching the old unit is how many homes end up with the wrong system.
Oversized systems short-cycle
They run in short bursts, waste energy, wear parts faster and leave rooms uneven.
Undersized systems fall behind
They run nonstop on the hottest and coldest days and still can't hold temperature.
Rooms get the wrong airflow
Without room loads, ducts are sized by guesswork and some rooms never get enough air.

Manual J questions
What is a Manual J load calculation?
Manual J is the ACCA standard for calculating how much heating and cooling a home needs, room by room. It accounts for insulation, windows, orientation, air leakage, ductwork location and local design temperatures.
Why not just size a new system by square footage?
Square-foot rules ignore what actually drives the load: insulation, windows, sun exposure, air leakage and climate. Two homes of the same size can need very different equipment. Rules of thumb usually lead to oversizing, which causes short cycling and uneven rooms.
Is a bigger furnace or AC better?
No. An oversized system short-cycles, which wastes energy, wears parts faster, leaves rooms uneven and, for AC, removes less humidity per cycle. The right size is the one that matches your home's calculated load.
Do you do a Manual J on every installation?
Yes. Every system we install is confirmed with a Manual J so the equipment matches your home.
Does altitude matter for a Manual J in Colorado?
Yes. Design temperatures and air density at Broomfield's elevation affect both the load and how much capacity equipment actually delivers, which is why the Manual J is followed by a Manual S equipment selection.
