Fix Hot and Cold Rooms in Your Broomfield Home

Upstairs bedrooms that bake in July. A basement that never warms up. A bonus room nobody uses. Uneven rooms usually aren't an equipment problem. They're an airflow problem, and we fix them at the source.

Common causes

Why some rooms never feel right

We measure before recommending anything, but these are the causes we find most often.

Not enough return air

Rooms without a return can't take in conditioned air. Upstairs bedrooms with doors closed are the classic case.

Undersized supply runs

Long, small or crushed runs deliver too little air to rooms with the highest loads.

Leaky or unbalanced ducts

Air leaks into attics and crawlspaces, or is pushed to rooms closest to the furnace.

A system that short-cycles

Oversized equipment shuts off before air reaches the far rooms.

How we fix it

Targeted fixes, not a bigger unit

We start by measuring room temperatures, airflow at registers and static pressure. Then we calculate what the problem rooms actually need and design the changes to deliver it.

Most fixes are duct modifications that work with your existing system. When a space can't be served well by the ductwork, such as some additions, we may recommend a ductless mini-split.

  • Add or enlarge return air
  • Resize or add supply runs
  • Seal leaky ducts
  • Balance airflow with dampers
  • Correct oversized equipment at replacement
  • Ductless mini-splits for hard-to-serve rooms

FAQ

Hot and cold room questions

Why is my upstairs so much hotter than downstairs?

Heat rises, the roof adds heat in summer, and upstairs rooms often have too little return air and undersized supply runs. We measure the airflow and correct the ductwork, adding returns or resizing supplies, rather than upsizing the AC.

Why is my basement always cold?

Many finished basements never got proper supply and return runs, or they share a branch with upstairs rooms. We calculate the basement's load and design supply and return air for it.

Will closing vents in other rooms help?

Usually not. Closing registers raises static pressure and can reduce total airflow, which can make the system less efficient without fixing the problem room.

Is a bigger AC or furnace the fix?

Rarely. A bigger unit on the same ducts can't push more air to the problem room and often makes short cycling worse. Fixing airflow is usually the real solution.

What about rooms over the garage or additions?

These rooms often have higher loads and long duct runs. Depending on the measurements, we'll resize the ductwork or recommend a ductless mini-split for that space.
